phenomenon : The Kidult

with one comment

Photobucket

i think one of the phenomenons in fashion that i personally believe is rather cool is the Kidult, purely in the fashion sense. i mean… think about the converse situation. everytime you see a kid DRESSED like an adult, don’t you think “TOO COOL/CUTE!”. (i do, however, hate kids who ACT like adults. bleaughx).

Photobucket

(Photo Credit: Ralph Lauren Kids. i actually have a really really great lookbook from Dior Kids but i can’t seem to find stills on the internet. those photos are CRAZY cool and cute, but this is kinda awww-ish as well)

so the Kidult, is basically an adult who dresses with semblances of a kid.

Photobucket

look at kanye (Photo Credit : The Sartorialist). the shirt is just screaming 6-year old print. yet theres a sophistication to the outfit and the overall effect is just super chic.

dressing like a kidult is cool but i guess only a certain type of guy can pull it off well. a guy who is inherently stylish yet whose taste levels are not completely questionable. it really is all about attitude. as ironic as it sounds, i believe the kidult needs to have some kind of maturity to be successful.

the above 2 runway looks are taken from D&G and Jeremy Scott. (ps i really wanted those gladiator sandals from d&g, but they didnt have my size by the time i was prepared to pay for them. haha)

jeremy scott is really one of the more kidult-ish designers out there. at an extreme of course. his clothes are quirky, dramatic and fun, but not particularly wearable. almost very couture in that sense, yet, not in the full meaning of the word.

a more well balanced designer would be marc jacobs and his diffusion marc by marc jacobs line. i’ll refrain from featuring too much of his stuff, if not this site will become almost a shrine to him, but i really do love his designs. i mean. i probably will do an entry on my favourite designers sooner or later, so i’ll refrain from going into why i love his clothes so much here.

there is just such style to all of his garments. his outfits as a whole are always really well balanced, and this is why i think marc’s clothes are the only ones i will wear a complete head to toe outfit of. haha.

i think one of the more memorable statements that i remember reading marc saying (or at least i remember it as marc), is that he’d rather a man be stylish than fashionable.

back to the idea of the Kidult, kids these days are becoming increasingly fashionable. this kid from paris looks barely 14 (Photo Credit : The Sartorialist) and yet his outfit is beyond fierce. and those shoes.

those shoes. those shoes. those shoes.

reference back to footwear entry 01. lol.

i think there is this big idea about growing up that we as individuals always fight against and often we forget that by embracing said ideas, we might end up, as elle woods would say, so much better than before. thesis, anti-thesis, synthesis, yada yada. haha.

Photobucket

i guess the whole idea is to not take fashion so seriously, the way we used to be when we were kids. to feel what we feel and really go with it. although as cosmo shows us (below), dressing up and looking dapper sometimes does have its allure.

bags

without comments

haha. i love bags. currently i most frequently carry a white canvas tote that was produced for environmental reasons, but after latching on a stainless steel ck whistle, it was all set and ready to be used.

the following bags are… wowzas. for some reason i’ve included briefcases as well, because i guess at some point in our lives we’re gonna need one, and lately they’re just so sexy.

Louis Vuitton Black Damier Graphite Duffel Bag

Photobucket

it’s a really simple yet modern take on an old brand classic. i think this is possibly the only LV monogram i have any inclination for and it’s just sooo sexy. it’s sophisticated and it’s really workable. i think the plus point about the damier is that it is also not too loud yet it’s obviously very classy, and it’s durable. if anything, LV takes care of its clients as far as they can.

Berluti Deux Jours

Photobucket

also from the family of LVMH, Berluti makes possibly the best leather stuff. one word : Handsome. like seriously. handsome shoes, handsome bags, handsome leather. fullstop. i know their leather is really well-treated and handcrafted and so much love goes into each piece. it’s really amazing. this bag is just. so handsome! look at it! tell me you disagree. wow.

Roc Star Nylon & Patent Leather Backpacks

Photobucket

how cute are these. seriously? they’re not serious at all, yet they look pretty decent and quirky and i bet they’ll be awesome to carry to college or on flights (where you’re not carrying the damier, haha.). backpacks aren’t my thing. i have a black Y-3 one that i bought because i had convinced myself that i would one day be carrying it whilst riding a motorcycle, but that’s about it. yet i think i would defo carry this. alternatively you can just go to Toys R Us or some random market and buy a cheap kids backpack. just make it work. haha.

Samsonite Black Label Alexander Mcqueen Men’s Carry-On

Photobucket

CROC-SKIN (it’s really a croc-skin print on cowhide)! ON A BRIEFCASE?!? NO!

this. is. sex. like… wow. it’s fashion meets function. i think this is possibly my favourite piece of luggage ever (it’s really really big actually. holds a 16″ laptop). i guess some really cool/hip business guy would be carrying this, but for some reason i really want it too! i doubt i’ll be bringing my laptop on the plane with me in the near future (NEW YORK THANKSGIVING!), but still how awesome would it be to carry this? alternatively, his black exo-skeleton roller-luggage is pretty cool too. (picture not inset)

Bottega Veneta Travel Bag

Photobucket

the thing about bottega is that EVERYTHING is handmade. if you wanted love and care, you have it. like. hand woven bags are pretty cool, but a handmade bag that is durable is just awesome. not the most masculine of bags, but still, a man’s bag is really about shape, but more so about the guy who’s carrying it.

footwear

without comments

i thought an appropriate official first entry would be on footwear.

i’ll be the first to admit that i’m not really into street shoes and the like, however, i do love myself some nice shoes.

the following items are all sooo different in their own ways yet i simply find myself allured by their individual beauty and characteristics.

Lanvin Side-Zip Trainers

Photobucket

These Lanvin trainers are fierce in too many ways. They’re bold yet sophisticated and there’s a very hip sensibility to it. I can imagine wearing these with a simple black shirt and dark denim jeans or even pairing it with a suit. I can’t begin to tell you how much I love these shoes. The zip-detail is a little surprise, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll love it because there will be less of a need to tie shoelaces. (on a side note i really hate tying shoelaces, but i really hate a full-on badly designed run-of-the-mill velcro shoe either). If I was allowed (or dared) to wear such awesome sports shoes I think i would have attended more sports classes. It’s high-fashion meets trend-friendly meets youth. which i guess is really what fashion is all about.

On a side-note (about these side-zip trainers.. HAHA), the difference between Trainers and Sneakers is… well, nothing. haha. trainers and sneakers are actually just the same thing in british-english and american-english. woohoo.

Pierre Hardy High-Top Sneakers

Photobucket

i’ve had a real thing for these babies for a long time. wayyy before the kanye craze. there’s something about a limited edition ANYTHING that is alluring, but the design of this shoe is just sooo wrong it’s right. i think few designers could have pulled the colour block off in such a polished kind of way. pierre hardy always does such refined stuff for hermes that it’s really nice to see such a wonderful “casual” piece from him. not so sure how practical it is or how many people can really pull it off (high cuts are difficult in themselves alone), but these shoes are incredibly sexy.

Marc By Marc Jacobs Navy & Grey Rainboots

Photobucket

haha. whilst these boots are a mere fraction of the retail (and possibly production, haha) costs of the other 2 items, i think they’re still extremely chic. it’s a really wearable and practical pair of boots! i dont think they necessarily have that much of a WOW factor, nor do i think that every fashionable item needs to either. sometimes a good simple design is powerful in itself.

the beginning

without comments

i’ve always wanted to start a fashion blog. just kinda about the things i like. i don’t expect anyone to read it. it’s also a reminder for myself to keep working at what i do to afford these little luxuries.

fashion is like art. you own it because you like it. you like it because you just do. it’s very personal and it’s very intimate and i guess that’s what makes it all so engaging.

i think a perfect world would be a world where EVERYONE puts in effort into what they wear. i mean. looking different or looking shaggy is perfectly fine, as long as there is intention behind an outfit.

i cannot wait to grow up.
